Calabar Carnival tagged “Africa’s Biggest Street Party” due to its scope and size, was created in 2004 as part of the vision of making Cross River State the tourism and hospitality hub for Nigeria and Africa. The Carnival which is held annually throughout the month of December in the olden city of Calabar, features numerous cultural activities including traditional dances, Ekpe masquerade procession, a boat regatta, international musical shows, fashion shows, food displays, Christmas grotto, etc. The highlight of the Carnival is competition amongst the five Carnival bands – Seagull, Passion 4, Masta Blasta, Bayside and Freedom during a colorful street procession. The Carnival has grown in popularity over the years and now attracts tourists from around the world.
