NIGERIA: Lagos – Badagry, Abeokuta, Ibadan, Oyo, Oshogbo, Ile-Ife, Idanre, Akure

On this 8 day Destination Nigeria Tour, you will visit the main commercial city of Lagos, the slave heritage town of Badagry; purchase Batik fabrics at Itoku market; drive through Ibadan and Oyo in the Yoruba heartland; view the mysterious Esie soapstone statues; visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Oxun Shrine. You will also visit the ancient city of Ile-Ife the Yoruba cradle of creation and climb the historic Idanre hills.

Day 01: LAGOS

  • On arrival in Lagos, you are met by representative of Jemi-Alade Tours and transfer to your hotel.
  • Dinner and evening at leisure.
  • Overnight Eko Hotel & Suites or similar.

Day 02: LAGOS – BADAGRY – ABEOKUTA

  • Depart Lagos after breakfast for Badagry along the coastal road west of Lagos at the Benin republic border. On arrival, embark on a tour of Badagry – Old slave market, slave trade museum and relics, Seriki Abbas compound, Gberefu beach (Slave embarkation point) etc. Lunch is at a city restaurant. Proceed for Abeokuta after lunch to visit historic Olumo rock, Itoku market selling ‘Adire’ (batik) fabric and Obasanjo Presidential Library Complex. Dinner and evening at leisure.
  • Overnight Park Inn by Radisson

Day 03: ABEOKUTA- IBADAN – OYO – ILORIN – ESIE – OSHOGBO

  • After breakfast depart for Oshogbo. Sightseeing at Ibadan and Oyo en-route. Lunch is at a city restaurant at Ilorin. Look around Ilorin then proceed to Esie to view mysterious soapstone statues at the Esie museum. Continue to Oshogbo.  Check-in at your hotel on arrival. Dinner and evening at leisure.

Day 04: OSHOGBO – ILE-IFE

  • After breakfast, embark on a tour of Oshogbo and environ. Oshogbo is the main city of Osun State located in the farming region where yams, cassava, grain, cotton and tobacco are grown. Oshogbo is the venue of the annual festival along the River Oxun. The festival is centered around the sacred grove of the river goddess Oxun, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The dense forest of the Oxun Sacred Grove is one of the last remnants of primary high forest in southern Nigeria. Regarded as the abode of the goddess of fertility Oxun, one of the pantheons of Yoruba gods, the landscape of the grove and its meandering river is dotted with sanctuaries and shrines, sculptures and art works in honor of Oxun and other deities. The sacred grove is seen as a symbol of identity for all Yoruba people. It testifies to the once widespread practice of establishing sacred groves outside all settlements. After lunch visit the national museum and historical sites at Ile-Ife. According to the Yoruba people, Ife is where the founding deities Oduduwa and Obatala began the creation of the world, as directed by the paramount Deity Olodumare. Return to hotel after visits.

Day 05: OSHOGBO – ONDO – IDANRE – AKURE

  • Depart Oshogbo after breakfast for Akure. Lunch is at a city restaurant at Ondo town en-route. After lunch, proceed to Idanre to climb Idanre hills site of the ancient town of Idanre. After the visit, depart Idanre for Akure and check-in at your hotel. Dinner and evening at leisure.

Day 06: AKURE – LAGOS

  • After breakfast, look around the city before departing for Lagos. Lunch is at a city restaurant in Ibadan en-route. On arrival, check-in at your hotel.  Dinner and evening at leisure.

Day 07: LAGOS

  • Lagos (local name Eko) the vibrant commercial capital of Nigeria founded about 1630 is located on the Atlantic coast of West Africa and composed of islands, mainland & peninsula.  A drive through Lagos Island, Victoria Island and Lekki peninsula areas of the city with stops at national museum, Freedom park, Brazilian Quarters, Eko Atlantic city (A major city development), Tinubu square and Isale Eko old section of the city, promises an exciting sightseeing tour.  Lunch is at a city restaurant.  During the tour, arrangement is made for shopping at Quintessence shop selling African gift items.  Return to hotel after tour.  Dinner and evening at leisure.

Day 08: LAGOS

  • After breakfast, embark on a half-day city tour of Lagos including NCF Conservation Center, Nike Art Gallery, Lekki Craft Market etc.  A boat ride on the lagoon to visit Tarkwa bey is the high point.  Lunch is at a city restaurant. Late afternoon transfer to the airport to catch onward departure flight. End of tour.
