The Slave Route Tour

This is a tour of the historic Slave Route in the former Oyo kingdom of the Yorubas, now part of southwest Nigeria and the Benin Republic. It is estimated that over 50% of slaves that were transported to the Americas passed through the area. Our tour traces the movement of slaves from the Yoruba heartland of Oyo North to ports of embarkation at Badagry, Porto Novo and Ouidah. A few years ago, the United Nations recognized the need to preserve important places along Africa’s coastlines that played major roles in this terrible chapter of man’s inhumanity to man. While most of the forts and prisons have not survived in Nigeria, the actual places are well known and efforts are being made to preserve them. Your tour will take you through Lagos, Ibadan, Iseyin, Osogun, Badagry, Cotonou and Quidah. Selected accommodations are one of the best in each destination.
